Mentorordningen ved Det psykologiske fakultet, UiB

The mentoring scheme at the Faculty of Psychology pairs new students with experienced peers in small groups to support a safer academic and social transition to university.

Who is it for?

New psychology students at the University of Bergen (UiB)

What is the mentoring scheme?

The mentoring scheme at the Faculty of Psychology, University of Bergen, is a student-initiated offer designed to support new students during their first year by facilitating lasting social and academic integration.

How does the scheme work?

The scheme is organised in small mentor groups where one mentor supports around ten students. Mentors are advanced students from the same programme who receive training in role understanding, group leadership and administrative tasks. Mentors are available both at meetings and outside them for questions and support.

Focus areas

Training and collaboration

Mentors receive courses and support through collaboration with student organisations such as Sammen and Uniped. The faculty's subject committee contributes to developing the scheme and to its content and implementation.

Practical experience and flexibility

The scheme has been trialled since 2020 and has organised several dozen mentor groups. Activities can include both academic sessions and social gatherings, and mentors find creative solutions when physical meetings are limited, for example during pandemic restrictions.

Benefits for mentees and mentors

Development and ambitions

The scheme is continuously evaluated and adjusted; topics under discussion include the possibility of two mentors per group to strengthen dialogue and diversity. A central aim is to increase student engagement and reduce dropout by providing new students with a safe and active first year.
