About the program
Lata is a peer mentoring program that, since 1994, has connected young people with trained volunteers. The program targets adolescents and young adults aged 12–26 and focuses on long-term personal support through regular one-to-one mentor–mentee meetings.
Focus areas
Mentoring within Lata helps address a wide range of challenges young people face, for example:
- interpersonal relationships with peers and parents,
- self-image and finding role models,
- loneliness and lack of social contacts,
- tendencies toward risky behaviour (experimentation with addictive substances, self-harm, suicidal thoughts).
Impact and experience
Over more than three decades the program has worked with approximately 900 volunteers and helped around one thousand young people. The total hours of mentor–mentee meetings are so extensive they correspond to six years of continuous meetings, illustrating the continuity and scale of the support provided.
For mentors and applicants
The program works with trained volunteers who provide peer support and accompany young people through difficult developmental periods; the program’s history shows experience working with risky behaviours and emotional crises in adolescents.
