TU Wien: Mentoring-Programm
Peer mentoring by experienced TU Wien students supporting first‑year, returning and struggling students through group meetings, study planning and campus orientation.
Who is it for?
First‑year, returning and struggling students
About the programme
The TU Wien Mentoring Programme is a peer support initiative in which experienced students (mentors) guide and accompany newer students (mentees) during the start of their studies and throughout challenging periods. The programme aims to ease the transition to university life, help with study planning and connect students with relevant services at TU Wien.
Who is it for?
- Mentees: primarily first‑semester students, students re‑entering their studies, and students experiencing study difficulties.
- Mentors: students from higher semesters with relevant study experience who volunteer to support groups of new students.
What happens in mentoring?
Mentoring is organised around regular group meetings led by a mentor. Typical topics include making the transition from school to university, expectations during studies, strategic planning of study trajectories (electives, scheduling), creating learning groups, and an introduction to TU Wien support services and learning resources. The programme also addresses motivation and organisational support for students returning to study.
Format and commitment
- Mentees usually participate for up to one academic year.
- There are roughly seven group meetings per semester for mentees, plus cross‑group events organised during the semester.
- A mentor typically looks after a group of approximately 15 mentees and accompanies them through their first semester with regular meetings.
Benefits for mentees
- Direct access to experienced student advice and practical tips for study success.
- Help organising and planning studies, finding peer learning groups and discovering campus services.
Benefits for mentors
- Opportunity to develop counselling, leadership and transferable social skills.
- Mentors receive a certificate confirming participation and can be awarded 3 ECTS credited under the Transferable Skills Catalogue / Social Competence; the responsible dean decides on formal crediting.
